Cathedral Square is transforming into a spectacle of light this winter, thanks to a new art installation called “Lightfield“, on view through May 5th, 2023.
The exhibition features eight geometric ground sculptures and 16 hanging lanterns suspended from the park’s trees.
The installation was created by Ukrainian and Canadian artist duo HYBYCOZO, formed by artists Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk. They’ve installed similar installations in Dubai, Turkey, Los Angeles, and more.
There will two nights of winter festivities to welcome the installation on Thursday, Jan. 19 and Friday, Jan. 20.
An ice bar, live DJs, s’mores and more are in store for the two-night premiere of “Lightfield”.
On January 19, join City leaders and project organizers for a ribbon-cutting at 5 PM at Cathedral Square Park.
Afterward, enjoy an ice bar hosted by Oak Barrel Public House from 5 – 8 PM, DJ Gemini Gilly from 5 PM – 7 PM, a custom soundscape by SleeperSound from 7 PM – 8 PM, and roasting s’mores on an open fire throughout the evening.
Then, return on Gallery Night on Friday, January 20, for more winter fun, including an ice bar from 5 – 8 PM, DJ RONCO from 5 PM – 7 PM, a repeat performance from SleeperSound from 7 PM – 8 PM, and roasting s’mores on an open fire throughout the event.
Starting at 8 PM, visit Taylor’s for an afterparty, at 795 N. Jefferson Street, featuring DJ Zerocool on Jan. 19 and Soletek on Jan. 20.
The premiere of “Lightfield” by HYBYCOZO is also a kickoff to Gallery Night MKE, which will enliven 30 galleries, museums, boutiques, and restaurants throughout downtown on Friday, Jan. 20 and Saturday, Jan. 21. A complete list of participants of Gallery Night MKE can be found at www.gallerynightmke.com.
HYBYCOZO also offers educational materials for parents and teachers to explore the intersection of art and mathematics. Free lesson plans, coloring pages, folding polyhedrons and more can be found at www.matharteducation.org.
