Brookfield’s Wirth Park (2585 Pilgrim Rd, Brookfield, WI 53005) has a brand-new addition that’s generating excitement throughout the community—a fully inclusive playground designed to accommodate children and adults of all abilities.
The playground officially opened last week, marking the culmination of a multi-year effort to create an accessible and engaging play space.
The new playground features a wide variety of equipment to meet the diverse needs of its users. From wheelchair-accessible ramps and swings to sensory play stations and interactive panels, the design ensures that everyone can participate, regardless of mobility or developmental challenges.
The space also includes a quiet corner, providing a soothing environment for those who may need a break from the sensory-rich play area.
The playground replaces the previous Wirth Park Tot Lot, which had been in place for nearly 30 years. Recognizing the need for an update, city officials and community members saw an opportunity to build a playground that not only met renovation needs but also provided a welcoming space for all.
The project was funded through a combination of donations, federal ARPA funds, and private contributions, demonstrating strong community support for the initiative.
One standout feature of the playground is its focus on promoting social interaction. Many of the play elements are designed to be enjoyed by multiple users at once, encouraging cooperation and play between children of different abilities. This approach transforms what could be a solo activity into a shared experience, fostering connections among visitors.
The addition of cushioned flooring throughout the play structure offers an extra layer of safety, making it a worry-free environment for active play.
The playground’s opening is a significant milestone for Brookfield, as it is the city’s first fully inclusive play space.
