If you’re exploring the Third Ward with your kids, you’ll be glad to know there’s a small but mighty playground where they can burn off some energy.
Gas Light Park is located at the intersection of Erie and Jefferson Streets, offering a green space in the heart of the city for kids looking for a playful break.
A Playground in the Heart of the Third Ward
Until recently, families living in or visiting the Third Ward had to drive to nearby neighborhoods for a playground. Thanks to the Historic Third Ward Association and the contributions of over 70 local donors, Gas Light Park now provides an accessible and inclusive play space that children of all abilities can enjoy.
The park’s Born Learning Trail adds an educational element, with interactive signs designed to engage kids and adults in shared activities.
The playground, though small, is packed with slides, climbing structures, and imaginative play areas that are perfect for little ones to let loose. As you watch the kids play, you’ll be surrounded by mature trees and green landscaping—a welcome retreat in the bustling, urban Third Ward.
A Nod to History
Gas Light Park is more than just a playground; it also honors the rich history of Milwaukee. Named after the Milwaukee Gas Light Co., a company that powered much of the city in the 1800s, the park retains three original gas light fixtures from that era.
While they can no longer be powered, these historic lamps serve as a reminder of the area’s industrial past and add a nostalgic charm to the modern space.
Make It a Day: Ride the Hop Streetcar
Pair your visit to Gas Light Park with a ride on The Hop Streetcar, Milwaukee’s free streetcar service, which conveniently passes through the Third Ward.
It’s an easy, fun way to explore more of the neighborhood and make your way to the park without the hassle of parking. For more information about routes and tips for riding, check out our full Hop Streetcar guide!
Sweet Treats and Warm Drinks Nearby
After an afternoon at the park, you won’t have to venture far for a snack. Take a short stroll over to Ben & Jerry’s for a scoop of your favorite ice cream, or if it’s a chilly day, warm up with a cup of hot cocoa from the Milwaukee Public Market.
Both spots are just a few blocks from the park, making them perfect stops to complete your outing.
Plan Your Visit
Located at 111 N. Jefferson St., Gas Light Park is easily accessible on foot, by bike, or via The Hop. It’s a great addition to your Third Ward itinerary, offering a perfect spot for families to unwind, explore, and connect with Milwaukee’s history.
