Milwaukee County Zoo’s Wild Lights 2024: What Families Can Expect This Holiday Season

Get ready to experience the Milwaukee County Zoo in a whole new light! Back for another holiday season, Wild Lights, presented by the We Energies Foundation, transforms the zoo into a mile-long winter wonderland with enchanting displays and immersive experiences for the whole family.

Running from November 30 to December 31, 2024 (with specific closure dates), the event promises magical memories and plenty of photo ops that capture the holiday spirit.

Here’s everything you need to know for an unforgettable visit.

Event Highlights

Dazzling Light Displays Families will walk through the zoo’s scenic paths, now transformed by dazzling lights and unique displays across several themed zones. Highlights include:

  • Polar Point: Step into a sparkling winter dreamscape.
  • Flamingle All the Way: Wander past a flamboyant flock of illuminated flamingos.
  • Jungle Bells: Imagine apes and primates as you’re surrounded by lights echoing the jungle’s lush landscape.
  • FantaSEA: An underwater-inspired journey through twinkling lights and sea creatures.
  • aROARa: Stroll under waves of light inspired by the northern lights.
  • Winter Woodland: Enjoy a serene walk through a light-adorned evergreen forest.
  • ButterFLIGHT: Let the “fireflies” and butterflies light your path through the zoo.

Special Attractions 

For an extra dose of wonder, don’t miss:

  • The Tree of Wildlife: A 28-foot animated, musical tree featuring some of the zoo’s favorite animals.
  • Light Wall: Get creative with this 12-foot glowing wall where kids and adults alike can use colorful pegs to design illuminated patterns and pictures.

Rides and Activities

On select nights, guests can enjoy rides and seasonal activities for an even more immersive experience:

  • North Shore Bank Safari Train: A wintry woodland train ride (weather-dependent).
  • Penzeys Carousel: Pick your favorite animal for a magical ride.
  • Sky Safari: View the Wild Lights from above for a unique perspective (weather-dependent).

And for tech-savvy kids and adults, the Elf Power VR Experience lets visitors step into Santa’s workshop for a fun, interactive virtual adventure.

Drive-Thru Nights

For a cozy and convenient option, select dates (Dec. 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, and 17) will feature drive-thru access. Families can enjoy the sparkling displays from the warmth of their vehicle, with special stops for snacks and drinks. Admission is per vehicle, and with holiday tunes streaming through the zoo, you’ll have a festive soundtrack along the way.

  • Early Bird Pricing (now through November 10): Adults and children – $15
  • Online Admission After Nov. 10: Adults – $18; Children (ages 3-12) – $16; Ages 2 and under – Free
  • Gate Pricing: Adults – $20; Children (ages 3-12) – $18; Ages 2 and under – Free

Zoo Pass and Platypus Circle members receive a 20% discount online with the code “holiday” and membership ID.

Additional Experiences and Accessibility

Beyond the lights, Wild Lights offers several memorable experiences:

  • Santa Visits: Meet Santa himself on select nights (Dec. 13, 14, 18-23), with a free gift included.
  • Live Entertainment: Enjoy festive music and performances in the U.S. Bank Gathering Place.

This year, the zoo invites guests to participate in “Wild Lights for Wildlife” by bringing in holiday lights for recycling. Recycling efforts help conserve space for wildlife and reduce landfill waste—so it’s a great way to enjoy the festivities while giving back.
