Milwaukee Recreation Opens Fall Registration For All Ages

The summer is winding down, but Milwaukee Recreation is offering a variety of fun and affordable activities for children and families for the fall.

Fall Registration is Now Open

Registration for fall activities are now open for all ages and abilities. Milwaukee Recreation offers a wide variety of programs for children and families, including music, dance, science, art, outdoor education, sports, and more. Their community centers are located throughout the city of Milwaukee.

Sign Up for Special Events

Special events are already lined up for the community this fall.

The 14th annual MPS Run Back to School 5K/1.5-mile run returns in person this month. Race day is Saturday, Aug. 28, so sign up soon. You can also win grant money for your school’s youth sports and wellness programs. Visit mkerec.net/RBTS to register and find more information.

Families are invited to the Hawthorn Glen Outdoor Education Center for the 28th annual Halloween Glen on Oct. 8 & 9. Actors will present interactive and educational skits at eight decorated stations at Hawthorn Glen, Milwaukee Recreation’s 23-acre nature center. This humorous and educational outdoor adventure is a great alternative to the usual Halloween events.

They also hope to bring back the popular Mother/Son Superhero Night, which was held in early November in past years. Stay tuned to mkerec.net for more information on the status of the event.

Twilight Centers for Teens

Twilight Centers provide free, safe place for teens to spend time with friends. Twilight Centers offer open gym time, game room activities, enrichment opportunities, free snacks, esports, and more.

Eight locations are open to middle school and high school students in the evenings this fall. Twilight Centers open to young people on Aug. 25.

Milwaukee Recreation is also hiring part-time program leaders to help facilitate activities for participants. Visit mkerec.net/twilight for more information.

Driver Education Slots Filling Quickly

Milwaukee Recreation offers Driver Education courses for MPS and non-MPS students alike. MPS students are eligible for the free MPS Drive class with behind-the-wheel training (a $35 fee is required to cover the cost of the temporary driving permit). All students are eligible for a Community-Based Driver Education program.

Driver Education registration is already open, and slots fill very quickly. Sign up today to guarantee a spot for your new driver.

Visit Milwaukee Recreation’s 52 Playfields

Families are encouraged to visit Milwaukee Recreation’s 52 playfields for outdoor time in the fall. The playfields are scattered throughout the city; you can find your neighborhood’s nearest location right here.

The department is in the midst of renovating its entire playfield network. Six sites have already been renovated and reopened. Click here to see the incredible transformation at those locations. Plans and renovations are underway at several more sites. Milwaukee Recreation is looking for feedback from the community on all future projects. Child Care Opportunities

Milwaukee Recreation provides child care opportunities at dozens of locations for youth during non-school hours. These programs provide a variety of academic and recreational support, including homework assistance, enrichment activities, technology education, sports & fitness activities, and social skills development.

Locations will open in late August. The up-to-date list of fall child care locations will be posted at mkerec.net/afterschool. Milwaukee Recreation is also hiring part-time camp directors, instructors, and staff at sites throughout the city.

Safety Measures

All participants are encouraged to review Milwaukee Recreation’s safety measures prior to registering and attending classes.

Milwaukee Public Schools requires face coverings in district facilities for everyone ages 3 and up. Should you need a face covering, one will be provided for you upon entering the facility.

Face coverings are not required while participating in outdoor programs operated by Milwaukee Recreation. However, individuals who are not fully vaccinated are encouraged to wear a mask in crowded outdoor settings or during activities that involve sustained close contact with other people who are not fully vaccinated.
